Après un Penetralia à la durée gargantuesque, Jute Gyte retourne sur son black metal microtonal avec Birefringence, album composé en prenant plus de libertés — c'est Adam Kalmbach lui-même qui le dit. Birefringence, c'est vraiment autre chose. On retrouve ces musiques cauchemardesques, dissonantes ("Dissected Grace"), mais la nouveauté, c'est que le génie maniaque profite de son expérience dans la musique ambiante pour créer des ambiances carrément malsaines sur la deuxième moitié de l'album.
